Historical background

The concept of Bismarck Forest is based on the famous politician and Iron Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. In the 1860s, von Bismarck forged a united Germany from several smaller states. His chief aim was to ensure the power of the Prussian state, and his victory over France in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871 broke France's dominance over Europe. In power, von Bismarck was a conservative monarchist who attempted to curb the influence of the Roman Catholic Church and stem the growing power of Germany's socialist movement. He was forced to retire in 1890, but numerous statues and memorials to the Iron Chancellor decorate German towns and cities to this day. The capital of the state of North Dakota in the United States was named Bismarck in honour of Otto von Bismarck.

Otto von Bismarck was not only a passionate politician all his life but also harboured a passion for nature. In his time off from political duties he adored taking long walks in his forest, the "Sachsenwald". He referred to the trees as his friends and they gave him a sense of peace and balance. In his famous letters to his beloved wife Johanna, he rarely misses to mention his long walks in the fields and the forest, gathering his thoughts and understanding nature as a universe in itself. Otto von Bismarck used his beautiful peaceful forest to passionately go riding, fishing and hunting. To this day, the Bismarck family loves and protects this natural habitat and runs an extensive forest maintenance programme to protect the beautiful nature they inherited. The forest is also the background and location for the Bismarcks passion for the sports of hunting, riding, tennis, golf and fishing, as well as for the Bismarcks famous social gatherings and festivities, reuniting some of the world most famous personalities from the aristocracy, business and art worlds.
